Prepping for Our California Road Trip – Life at Kal-Haven Outpost
Back To Blogging
It’s been a while since my last post, and there are a thousand excuses. I thought about retiring from writing, the trailer’s Wi-Fi is spotty, King had some health issues, or maybe I was just lazy. You can take your pick.
But I’m back and committed to being more disciplined with my blogging!
A Summer of Ups and Downs
The summer started off quietly. We got settled into our routine at Kal-Haven Outpost – work, golf, and tinkering around the trailer on our days off. The peaceful rhythm kept us busy, but then life threw us a curveball.
In June, King had some health issues and ended up in the hospital for a few days. It could have been serious, but thankfully, after a lengthy recovery, he’s doing well. Just as we were getting back to normal, both of us caught COVID at the end of July. Four years without sickness made us feel invincible, but COVID knocked the wind out of our sails. Lesson learned: we’re not invincible. We’ve already scheduled our next booster shots along with the recommended flu and RSV shots before we leave Michigan in October.
Michigan Summer Winding Down
The Michigan summer is drawing to a close. Rumor has it we’ll get one last wave of heat this week, but cooler weather is just around the corner. I love the sunny days and crisp, cool nights – perfect for sleeping.
After Labor Day, things slow down at the campground. The weekends remain busy, and I love watching kids riding their bikes around, celebrating one last weekend of freedom. But there’s a sense of finality in the air.
During the week, we switch gears, attending our grandchildren’s school sports events. Saturdays? King is glued to college football while I put a pot of chili in the slow cooker, paired with homemade bread. It’s a family tradition, even though I’m not entirely sure King is that fond of chili – but he’s stuck with it!
Preparing for Our Next Adventure
After the final golf scramble in October – the Halloween Open – we’ll be heading west to California. Before we hit the road, we’ve got some prep work to do. The trailer needs new tires, and we’ll get the truck serviced – oil change, tire rotation, brakes checked. Our goal? To make it past Oklahoma without a breakdown this year. Ideally, we’ll make it all the way to California and back without any hiccups, but hey, that’s RV life.
In the meantime, I’ve been busy decluttering our 262-square-foot trailer. It’s easy to get overrun with stuff in such a small space, so I’ve been unstuffing, rearranging, and cleaning. I hate moving five things to get to one item, so I’m always finding ways to organize more efficiently. I’ve also been prepping the cupboards to make sure everything stays secure when we’re barreling down the highway or bouncing over potholes. (Seriously, how many cans of chickpeas does one person need?)
Oh, and I finally washed the outside of the trailer! The campground was quiet, and I realized it had been a long, long, long time since it got a good scrub down. It looks amazing – who knew soap and water could make such a difference?
Living the RV Life
Over the summer, some family members asked how we can live this way. To me, it seems perfectly natural. We live this way because it’s what we want to do. There wasn’t some big disaster that forced us out of a “normal” life – we simply chose to live our lives on the road, enjoying it while we can.
We know this won’t last forever. Eventually, we’ll settle into a more conventional lifestyle. But until then, we’re enjoying every moment of this adventure.
Final Thoughts
So, life goes on. We roll with the punches, handle the bumps along the way, and continue our journey.
Remember to be kind, enjoy life, and don’t kick sand in the sandbox. And don’t forget to vote this November!
