California RV Life: Settling Into a Simple Holiday Season

California RV Life on a Hillside Near the Pacific

King and I have settled into our California life – having landed in the state the first week of November. We spent two weeks at a campground in Bonita before moving to a friend’s spot in his backyard. This is our third season staying here.

It is a beautiful spot on a hill with the mountains to the east and the Pacific to the west. It’s not a remote area, as it actually is in a neighborhood near the Camp Pendleton marine base.

California RV Life at a Friend’s Property

Our friend spent years developing his property complete with trails meandering down the hillside to the river below, a gazebo (an owl has taken up residence in it), avocado and apple trees, and lots and lots of landscaping and wildlife. Age and an ailing wife have slowed down his ability to care for the property as he once did, but King has been able to take up some of the slack. His children, who live in the northern part of the state, help out when they can.

California RV Life and Daily Routines

King has a difficult time just sitting and is in his element here. I’ll often find him on one of the trails with a leaf blower, cleaning the pathway, or with a pair of clippers in his hand trimming the ajuga. Our friend will often sit and watch.

California RV Life With Family and Christmas Traditions

California RV Life With Grandchildren

At our daughter’s house we are busy getting ready for Christmas. The day after Thanksgiving we went to a tree farm and cut our own tree. Our grandsons were able to cut it down themselves for the first time. Sigh. They are growing.

Their house is decorated and the other day while they were at school I baked cookies. “Grandma, it smells like Christmas.” Words that warm my heart. The cookies were gone in three days so I made more yesterday and promised to come back Saturday so we could make thumbprint cookies together. Although the boys are old enough to know who Santa really is, they still decorate cookies on Christmas Eve to leave out for him (along with a few carrots for Rudolph and his friends).

California RV Life: Keeping the Holidays Simple

California RV Life and Meaningful Traditions

It’s a simple life. While at the trailer I spend my day making Christmas presents for the grandchildren back in Michigan. I can’t say what I’m making on the off-chance they actually read my blog. I honestly think my secret is safe, but just in case … It will remain a secret.

Sometime between now and Christmas King and I will be taking the boys shopping for their mother. It was a tradition my parents started with our children – they usually took them on Christmas Eve. I don’t think I’ll wait that long. I’m not into crowds. We may even shop online. It will be the thought that counts, right?

Enjoy your traditions. Make new ones. Keep it simple.
